HUNT & HIKE
– a BLACK BEAR in Canada
We are HUNT & HIKE
At Hunt & Hike, with Trine and Rikke as experienced hunting guides, we specialize in this particular hunting area in Canada. We bring a deep commitment and great passion to the hunt in this pristine wilderness. Although we have hunted across several continents, it is in Canada that we find the most impressive trophies and the greatest adventures. We offer tailor-made hunting trips for black bears, and we are with you all the way – from booking to hunting and until we drop you off at the airport again.
We offer premium black bear hunting experiences with high success rates in some of the most beautiful natural areas. In British Columbia, bait hunting is prohibited – a rule we fully support. Our hunting method is based on spot-and-stalk, where the hunt is on the bear’s terms.
THE HUNT
You can choose between the classic method, where we drive through the terrain and spot bears, or a more challenging approach, where we move on foot with a tent on our backs deep in the mountains. No matter which form of hunting you choose or a combination of both, an authentic and exciting experience awaits. In the spring, the bears have just come out of the cave and are hungry for green grass. The south-facing cutblocks are where they prefer to be after a long winter hibernation. The bears are also in heat in the spring, and we see large boars at this time of year, which we rarely see at any other time. Having just come out of the cave, the bears are still wearing their full and thick winter coats. The bears are generally completely black, and many of them have the classic white “V” on their chests. There are also several brownish shades, including the characteristic “cinnamon” bear.
HUNTING FROM BASECAMP
The first form of hunting involves driving off-road with 4×4, where we spot bears from strategic lookout points. Once a suitable bear is located, a stalk is initiated. Often, the bears can also be seen grazing along the gravel road, allowing for a stalk directly from the car. During this form of hunting, you will stay comfortably in our base camp in wooden cabins, where our skilled chef will provide hot meals. In the evening, the hunters gather around the fire, enjoy a glass of whisky and share the day’s experiences.
HUNTING FROM SPIKE CAMP
The second type of hunting is more physically demanding. We drive to a trail and head out into the wilderness, surrounded by mountainsides and rivers. Here the hunt starts directly from the canvas or our spike camp. This hunt takes place later in the season when the greenery has sprouted and the bears are more active in the mountains. After spotting a bear of suitable size, the stalking begins on foot. Accommodation is in the tent camp where we prepare freeze-dried food over the fire.
No matter which form of hunting you choose, we adapt the experience to your wishes and needs.
HUNTING PERIODS
May – June
The hunting season runs from mid-May to early June and lasts five days.
-
Mid-May: Ideal for a comfortable hunt from basecamp, patrolling by pick-up truck and spotting bears in the south-facing hills where the grass sprouts first.
-
Early June: Nature is in full bloom and bears are more active in the mountains. If you want a challenging mountain hunt, this is the optimal time.
The area
Our hunting area is located in British Columbia and covers almost 16,000 square kilometers, which is twice the size of Zealand. The area is unique, not only for the diversity and quality of game, but also for the versatile hunting terrain it offers. The area contains 3 separate mountain ranges, and we can’t possibly hunt it all in a lifetime. The western part is characterized by rugged glacier-clad mountains, while in the east there are rolling alpine hills. Throughout the territory there are willow-covered river valleys and old burnt areas where berries and green grass grow well – something that attracts hungry bears after many months of hibernation.
The journey there
All our hunting trips begin in Prince George, British Columbia, which is easily accessible by flights from major international carriers like Air Canada and WestJet. We pick you up at 10:00 am at the Carmel Inn(www.carmelinn.ca) in Prince George the day before the hunt starts. The journey to basecamp takes around 6-8 hours by car and this is where the adventure begins. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other as we slowly approach the start of the hunt in the stunning Canadian wilderness. To ensure you are well prepared, we recommend that you arrive in Prince George at least one day before the pickup. This way you can avoid any delays and be fully prepared for the hunting experience.

LOGI
When you arrive in Prince George, you’ll be met by us and picked up in a pickup truck before heading out to our base camp, located 6-8 hours into the mountains. We’ll spend the first evening relaxing, sorting out the logistics and getting ready for the hunting adventure ahead. We gather for a nice dinner, go through the practical details and take a trip to the shooting range so you feel confident and ready for the hunt.
Depending on your preferences, the hunt can be based in our basecamp, a remote cabin, a spike camp – or a combination of these. Below you can read more about the different types of stays
BASECAMP
Our basecamp is beautifully secluded on the shores of a tranquil lake, in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. Here you’ll find rustic yet comfortable cabins with wood-burning stoves and bunks. The basecamp is equipped with electricity and hot showers so you can relax and recharge after a day in the backcountry. We also have a secondary basecamp deeper in the wilderness – a charming 2-story log cabin that serves as our backcountry camp. Here too there is electricity and a hot shower, this is where we ride out.
HYTTE
Our hunting from cabins provides a comfortable experience as we are guaranteed dry weather and have better facilities. Each cabin is equipped with a wood-burning stove and mattresses so you can enjoy a good night’s sleep and stay warm after a long day of hunting. We have carefully selected cabins that are strategically located in different parts of the terrain, close to the best hunting areas. This allows you to experience the many facets of the landscape, from the lush valleys to the more dramatic mountainsides. The cabins offer a comfortable stay, leaving you well rested and ready for the next day’s hunt.
SPIKECAMP
Our spike camp offers an authentic wilderness experience. Here we stay in either lightweight hiking tents carried on our backs or in wall tents with stoves carried out by horses. Wall tents provide a little extra comfort, while hiking tents offer a more primitive experience. Hiking tents can be used in all types of hunting if a spontaneous opportunity to take down a moose arises. Regardless of tent type, you get close contact with nature and a true wilderness hunt.

Our last group in Sweden included a familiar face—a former hunting guest and friend from our mountain goat trips in Canada. This time, he brought his twin sons along.
It really made it all come full circle guiding their father to success on mountain goat, and just a year and a half later guiding his two boys on fallow deer here in Sweden.
Hunting across generations means everything to us. Not just for the tradition, but because really the best moments are shared under open skies and around a fire. 🌕

Our hunting trips to Sweden are for anyone who wants the full experience. 🇸🇪
Whether you’re totally new to hunting, looking to learn new techniques or just get better at what you already do.
These guys came to learn—and to bring some meat home for their families.
We guided them through everything, from field dressing and skinning to how we plan and approach a stalk, so they could be part of the whole process.
Thanks for a great trip guys, safe Travels home 🌲

... And honestly, we don’t feel the same urge to pull the trigger anymore unless its an experience we can share with each other.
We just did our annual game report here in Denmark, and our own list was short: a couple of birds and a few fallow calves.
But with our clients it’s been a different story — a full season with fallow deer, wildboars, moose, black bear, and mountain goats.. A lot of unforgettable moments. 🌠

There are moments in life when you wish you could pause time — and this was one of them. 💛
The best part was seeing our dad out there in the mountains, working like he did 30 years ago when he was a hunting guide — just like us.
Even though his joints and knees aren’t what they used to be, he spent days with a chainsaw, climbed mountains, and helped with the horses. Even when the trip had a few tough moments..
We cant wait to get outhere again, together. 🏔️

A group from the Netherlands joined us for fallow deer hunt in Sweden ❄️
Peter-Jan booked the trip a year ago for himself, his father, and his father’s friend. It was their first time hunting fallow deer, and they wanted a proper hands-on experience.
We had some great stalks in crisp snow and freezing temperatures through the Swedish forests — real winter conditions cause everything in our camp was frozen solid.
It was nice sharing stories about hunting traditions and learning more about how things are done in the Netherlands - we learned how limited hunting unfortunately is in their home country...
Thank you for the good company and positive attitude.
Safe travels home — See you again. 🌠
