HUNT & HIKE

- and BLACK BEAR in Canada

We are HUNT & HIKE

At Hunt & Hike, with Trine and Rikke as experienced hunting guides, we specialise in this particular hunting area in Canada. We bring a deep commitment and passion to hunting in this pristine wilderness. Although we have hunted across several continents, Canada is where we find the most impressive trophies and the greatest adventures. We offer customised black bear hunting trips and we're with you every step of the way - from booking to hunting to dropping you off at the airport.

We offer premium black bear hunting experiences with high success rates in some of the most beautiful natural areas. In British Columbia, bait hunting is prohibited - a rule we fully support. Our hunting method is based on spot-and-stalk, where the hunt is on the bear's terms.

THE HUNT

You can choose between the classic method, where we drive through the terrain and stay in a base camp with comfort, warmth and lit cabins - or take the more challenging approach where we stay in a spike camp deep in the mountains. Here you can start spotting bears already from the tent canvas. Whichever hunting method you choose, or a combination of both, you're in for an authentic and exciting experience. In spring, the bears have just emerged from their dens and are hungry for green grass. The south-facing cutblocks are where they prefer to be after a long hibernation. The bears are also in rut in spring, and we see large boars at this time of year that we rarely see at any other time. Having just emerged from the den, the bears are still wearing their full and thick winter coats. Bears are generally all black, and many of them have the classic white "V" on their chest. There are also several shades of brown, including the distinctive "cinnamon" bear.

HUNTING FROM BASECAMP

The first form of hunting involves driving in the terrain with a 4×4, spotting bears from strategic vantage points. Once a suitable bear is located, a stalk is initiated. Often the bears can also be seen grazing along the gravel road, allowing for a stalk directly from the vehicle. During this type of hunt, you'll stay comfortably at our basecamp in wooden cabins, where our skilled chef will provide hot meals. In the evening, hunters gather around the campfire, enjoy a glass of whisky and share the day's experiences.

HUNTING FROM SPIKE CAMP

Another type of hunting is more physically demanding, but still involves a certain amount of off-road driving to cover larger areas. Here the hunt often starts directly from the tent canvas and the feeling of being "on the hunt all the time" is very present - we have experienced fresh bear tracks through the spike camp in the morning and late evening. This type of hunting takes place later in the season when the greenery has started to sprout and the bears are more active. Once a bear of suitable size is spotted, the stalking on foot begins. We spend the night in the tented camp where food is cooked over a campfire or in our small gas kitchen - a simple but intense and authentic wilderness experience.

No matter what type of hunt you choose, we customise the experience to suit your needs.

HUNTING PERIODS

May - June

The hunting season runs from mid-May to early June and lasts five days.

  • Mid-May: Ideal for a comfortable hunt from basecamp where we patrol by pick-up truck and spot bears in the south-facing hills where the grass sprouts first.

  • Start of June: Nature is in full bloom and bears are more active in the mountains. If you want a challenging mountain hunt, this is the optimal time.

The area

Our hunting area is located in British Columbia and covers almost 16,000 square kilometres, which is twice the size of Zealand. The area is unique, not only for the diversity and quality of game, but also for the versatile hunting terrain it offers. The area contains 3 separate mountain ranges and we can't possibly hunt it all in a lifetime. The western part is characterised by rugged glacier-clad mountains, while in the east there are rolling alpine hills. Throughout the territory there are willow-covered river valleys and old burnt areas, where berries and green grass grow abundantly - something that attracts hungry bears after many months of hibernation.

The journey there

All our hunting trips begin in Prince George, British Columbia, which is easily accessible by flights from major international carriers like Air Canada and WestJet. We pick you up at 10.00 am at the Carmel Inn (www.carmelinn.ca) in Prince George the day before the hunt starts. The journey to basecamp takes around 6-8 hours by car and this is where the adventure begins. It's a great opportunity to get to know each other as we slowly approach the start of the hunt in the impressive Canadian wilderness. To ensure you are well prepared, we recommend that you arrive in Prince George at least one day before pick-up. This way you can avoid any delays and be fully prepared for the hunting experience.

HEIGHT POINTS

  • Wilderness hunting with the whole experience in mind

  • 6-7 feet and a chance for bigger bears

  • As a hunter, you are involved in the entire educational process of relocating your downed black bear

  • Share the experience with family and friends

LOGI

When you arrive in Prince George, you'll be met by us and picked up in a pickup truck and taken to our base camp, located 6-8 hours into the mountains. We'll spend the first evening landing, sorting out the logistics and getting ready for the hunting adventure ahead. We'll gather for a nice dinner, go through the practical details and take a trip to the shooting range so you feel confident and ready for the hunt.

Depending on your preferences, the hunt can be based at our basecamp, a remote cabin, a spike camp - or a combination of these. Below you can read more about the different types of stays

BASECAMP

Our basecamp is beautifully secluded on the shores of a tranquil lake, in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. Here you'll find rustic yet comfortable cabins with wood-burning stoves and bunks. The basecamp is equipped with electricity and hot showers so you can relax and recharge after a day in the backcountry. We also have a secondary basecamp deeper in the wilderness - a charming 2-storey log cabin that serves as our backcountry camp. Here too there is electricity and a hot shower, this is where we ride out.

HYTTE

Our hunting from cabins provides a comfortable experience as we are guaranteed dry weather and have better facilities. Each cabin is equipped with a wood-burning stove and mattresses so you can enjoy a good night's sleep and stay warm after a long day of hunting. We have carefully selected cabins that are strategically located in different parts of the terrain, close to the best hunting areas. This allows you to experience the many facets of the landscape, from the lush valleys to the more dramatic mountainsides. The cabins offer a comfortable stay, leaving you well-rested and ready for the next day's hunt.

SPIKECAMP

Our spike camp offers an authentic wilderness experience. Here we stay in either lightweight hiking tents carried on our backs or in wall tents with stoves carried out by horses. Wall tents provide a little extra comfort, while hiking tents offer a more primitive experience. Hiking tents can be used in all types of hunting if a spontaneous opportunity to take down a moose arises. Regardless of tent type, you get close contact with nature and a true wilderness hunt.

Some hunts are just more luck than skill…We rode for a few hours to a place we truly love — where we know the big bulls roam. 🫎This hunt with the two brothers, Mads and Svend, was no exception. They were really put to the test when we had to build a temporary camp and spent six hours drying all their clothes after falling into a beaver pond. But maybe that brought us some luck — because later, our little blue tarp and the crackling of the campfire drew a big bull to within just nine meters of us.Guys, what a pleasure! You kept the spirits high and pushed through even when the temperature dropped below freezing. What an adventure! ❄️Moosehunting can be done in many ways! Still a few spot left for 2027! 🖐🏼🖐🏼#MooseBull #moosehunting #CanadaAdventure #HuntingAdventures #TravelAgency #CanadaHunting
